Company History...

The Company is the successor to The Considine Company, Inc. ("TCC") founded by Terry Considine in May 1975. TCC was engaged in the national ownership and operation of apartment and commercial properties for a dozen years when, in 1987, TCC acquired 75% ownership of McDermott, Stein and Ira, a Denver based apartment management company founded in 1977 and headed by Steve Ira. The combined firms operated as Property Asset Management for several years. It managed apartments for, among others, PDI, Inc. an asset management firm organized and headed by Peter Kompaniez and Robert Lacy.

In 1994, Terry Considine and Steve Ira decided to organize an apartment REIT. Peter Kompaniez and Robert Lacy decided to include the PDI properties. Apartment Investment & Management Co. ("AIMCO") became a public company through an Initial Public Offering in July 1994. Its initial assets included properties controlled by Terry Considine and by PDI, Inc., as well as the property management business of Property Asset Management.

In one sense, the "founders" of AIMCO are Terry Considine, Steve Ira, Peter Kompaniez and Robert Lacy. In a larger sense, the AIMCO "founders" include the hundreds and thousands of dedicated people whose hard work each day makes AIMCO a preferred employer, an operator of attractive and reliable housing for hundreds of thousands who are residents, and a storehouse of value for the thousands who have invested in its stock.
