This is a little public history on Bill Ayers back ground and associates.
During the 2008 U.S. presidential campaign, controversy[1] arose regarding Barack Obama‘s relationship with Bill Ayers, a Distinguished Professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and a former leader of the Weather Underground, a radical left organization in the 1970s.[2] Investigations by CNN, The New York Times and other news organizations concluded that Obama did not have a close relationship with Ayers.[3][4][5]
Ayers and his wife, Bernardine Dohrn, hosted a gathering at their home in 1995,[6] where Alice Palmer introduced Obama as her chosen successor in the Illinois State Senate.[4][7] Obama and Ayers’ nine years of service on the board of directors of the Woods Fund of Chicago overlapped for three years from 1999 to 2002.[4][6][7]
The matter was first raised by the British and American press, then by conservative blogs and talk radio programs,[8][9][10] and then by moderator George Stephanopoulos during a debate between Hillary Clinton and Obama in April 2008. The Obama-Ayers connection was used as a major campaign issue by Republican presidential candidate John McCain and vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin during the 2008 presidential election campaign. Obama has condemned Ayers’ past,[11][12] and stated that he does not have a close association with him.[6]

The Weather Underground Organization (WUO), commonly known as the Weather Underground, was an American radical left-wing domestic terrorist[2] organization founded on the Ann Arbor campus of the University of Michigan. Originally called Weatherman, the group became known colloquially as the Weathermen. Weatherman organized in 1969 as a faction of Students for a Democratic Society (SDS)[3] composed for the most part of the national office leadership of SDS and their supporters. Their goal was to create a clandestine revolutionary party for the overthrow of the U.S. government.[4]
With revolutionary positions characterized by black power and opposition to the Vietnam War,[3] the group conducted a campaign of bombings through the mid-1970s and took part in actions such as the jailbreak of Dr. Timothy Leary. The “Days of Rage“, their first public demonstration on October 8, 1969, was a riot in Chicago timed to coincide with the trial of the Chicago Seven. In 1970 the group issued a “Declaration of a State of War” against the United States government, under the name “Weather Underground Organization”.[5]
The bombing campaign mostly targeted government buildings, along with several banks. Most were preceded by evacuation warnings, along with communiqués identifying the particular matter that the attack was intended to protest. No people were killed in any of their acts of property destruction, although three members of the group were killed in the Greenwich Village townhouse explosion. Years after the dissolution of Weatherman, former members Kathy Boudin and David Gilbert joined the Black Liberation Army in robbing a Brink’s armored car in 1981, which resulted in the deaths of three people including Waverly Brown, the first black police officer on the Nyack police force.[6]
For the bombing of the United States Capitol on March 1, 1971, they issued a communiqué saying that it was “in protest of the U.S. invasion of Laos“. For the bombing of the Pentagon on May 19, 1972, they stated that it was “in retaliation for the U.S. bombing raid in Hanoi“. For the January 29, 1975 bombing of the United States Department of State building, they stated that it was “in response to the escalation in Vietnam“.[5]
